Climbing Zugspitze, Germany’s highest peak, is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure for hikers and nature enthusiasts. This Zugspitze hike tour takes you on a two-day journey through the breathtaking Reintal Valley, where you’ll explore scenic gorges, lush forests, and dramatic alpine landscapes. Designed for hikers of moderate experience, this tour combines physical challenge with unforgettable vistas, ensuring a rewarding and memorable experience as you reach the summit of Zugspitze.

On the first day of your Zugspitze hike tour, you’ll start at Garmisch-Partenkirchen and traverse the picturesque Partnachklamm Gorge. The trail winds through the serene Reintal Valley, offering gentle ascents alongside the Partnach River. After a well-deserved rest at the Bockhütte, you’ll continue to Reintalanger Hut, your accommodation for the night. Here, you’ll enjoy a hearty Bavarian dinner, rest in dorm-style rooms, and prepare for the more challenging climb to the summit on day two.

Day two of the Climb Zugspitze adventure begins with an early ascent toward Knorrhütte, where the terrain becomes steeper and more demanding. The hike progresses through the rugged Zugspitzplatt, with sections requiring basic scrambling skills and the assistance of fixed cables. Reaching the summit is the ultimate reward, with panoramic views stretching across Germany and Austria. After celebrating your achievement, you can opt for a scenic cable car descent, completing your incredible Zugspitze hike tour.

Important Information to Climb Zugspitze :

  • Best Season: Late June to early October. Snow can be present on the trail in early and late season, so check conditions.
  • Gear: Good hiking boots, trekking poles, weatherproof clothing, a headlamp, snacks, and plenty of water. Crampons may be needed in early or late season if there’s snow.
  • Weather: Conditions can change quickly in the Alps. Check the weather forecast in advance and be prepared for rapid changes.
  • Difficulty: Moderate to challenging due to distance and elevation gain. The Reintal Route is non-technical but requires good physical fitness.
  • Accommodation: We will reserve your spot at Reintalanger Hut.

 

Alternate Route for Experienced Climbers

If you’re looking for a more challenging option, we can consider the Höllental Route. This route includes a glacier crossing and exposed sections with fixed cables. It’s shorter but more technical, recommended only for experienced climbers with alpine equipment.

Itinerary

Day 1: Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Reintalanger Hut

  • Start Point: Garmisch-Partenkirchen (near the Ski Stadium)
  • Distance: ~16 km
  • Elevation Gain: ~1,200 meters
  • Estimated Time: 5-6 hours
  • End Point: Reintalanger Hut (1,366 meters)

Itinerary:

  1. Early Start: We Begin early (around 8:00 AM) from the Garmisch-Partenkirchen Ski Stadium. Following Partnachklamm beautiful Gorge.
  2. Through Partnachklamm Gorge: The trail through the gorge is breathtaking and sets the tone for the scenic hike. After exiting, you’ll enter the Reintal Valley.
  3. Valley Hike: Continue through the Reintal, following the Partnach River. The terrain here is relatively flat and forested, offering a gradual warm-up.
  4. Bockhütte: After about 3-4 hours of hiking, you’ll reach Bockhütte (1,052 meters). This is a great spot to rest and refuel with some traditional Bavarian food.
  5. Climb to Reintalanger Hut: The trail gradually ascends to Reintalanger Hut (1,366 meters). Arrive by mid-afternoon to secure your spot and rest. You can have dinner at the hut and enjoy a well-earned break.
  6. Overnight Stay: We stay in Reintalanger Hut, which offers dorm-style accommodations, food, and a comfortable place to rest for the challenging ascent on Day 2.

Day 2: Reintalanger Hut to Zugspitze Summit

  • Start Point: Reintalanger Hut (1,366 meters)
  • Distance: ~10 km
  • Elevation Gain: ~1,600 meters
  • Estimated Time: 7-8 hours
  • End Point: Zugspitze Summit (2,962 meters)

Itinerary:

  1. Early Start: We begin hiking by 6:00 AM to ensure we have enough time to reach the summit before late afternoon.
  2. Knorrhütte: Continue through the valley until we reach Knorrhütte (2,052 meters) after about 2-3 hours. Take a short break here, as the more challenging part of the ascent begins after this point.
  3. Ascent to Zugspitzplatt: The route becomes steeper as you enter the Zugspitzplatt, a rocky alpine plateau below the summit. The trail is well-marked but may involve scrambling on rocky terrain.
  4. Final Summit Push: The last segment is the most strenuous, with some sections requiring surefootedness and a bit of basic scrambling. There are fixed cables in exposed areas to assist climbers.
  5. Zugspitze Summit: Congratulations! You’ll reach the summit (2,962 meters) in the afternoon, where panoramic views of Germany, Austria, and the surrounding Alps await. There’s a small building, café, and viewing platform to explore.
  6. Descent Options:
    • Cable Car Down: Most climbers take the cable car back to either the Eibsee or back to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. You can purchase tickets at the summit.
    • Descent on Foot: If you’re prepared for another night on the mountain, you can descend via the same route or take one of the other routes down.
