Hamburg  is the second largest city in Germany after Berlin and the eighth largest in the European Union, as well as the third largest port in Europe after Rotterdam and Antwerp. Hamburg is a state city, which means it is one of the sixteen states of Germany. This city is built on the banks of the Elbe River. Hamburg is twice as big as London and seven times as big as Paris.

The official name reflects Hamburg’s history as a member of the medieval Hanseatic League and a free imperial city of the Holy Roman Empire.

This city is surrounded by hundreds of canals that pass through it. Boats drive inside the canals to the city center and there are countless cafes around them. The Jungfernstieg connects the new town with the old town, where landmarks such as the original Sankt Michaelis church from the 18th century can be seen.
