Discover the Black Forest, Germany: Nature, Lakes, Waterfalls and Traditional Villages

The Black Forest, known in German as the Schwarzwald, is one of Germany’s most beautiful and recognisable holiday regions. Famous for its dense evergreen forests, picturesque villages, traditional cuckoo clocks, scenic mountain roads and delicious Black Forest cake, this destination offers a wonderful combination of nature, culture and relaxation.

Whether you are looking for outdoor adventures, peaceful lakeside scenery, charming historic towns or authentic German traditions, the Black Forest has something for every traveller.

But what is the Black Forest really like? Where is it located, how large is the region, and what makes it so attractive to visitors from Germany and around the world?

Where Is the Black Forest Located?

The Black Forest is situated in south-western Germany, in the federal state of Baden-WĂĽrttemberg. It lies close to the borders of France and Switzerland, making it an ideal destination for travellers exploring the three-country region.

Covering approximately 6,000 square kilometres, the region stretches for around 160 kilometres from north to south and up to 50–60 kilometres from east to west.

The Rhine Valley forms much of its western and southern boundary, while the region’s eastern landscapes gradually connect with the Swabian countryside.

Thanks to its location, the Black Forest can be combined with visits to Freiburg, Baden-Baden, Stuttgart, Strasbourg, Basel, Zurich and other destinations in Germany, France and Switzerland.

Why Is It Called the Black Forest?

The name Black Forest has its roots in Roman history. The Romans referred to the densely wooded region as Silva Nigra, meaning “Black Forest” in Latin.

The name is traditionally associated with the thick evergreen forests, particularly the dark fir and spruce trees that cover many of the mountain slopes. From a distance, these dense forests can appear almost black, especially under cloudy skies or in the evening light.

Today, the landscape is much more diverse than the name might suggest. Visitors will discover open mountain meadows, green valleys, vineyards, lakes, traditional farmhouses and spectacular viewpoints.

What Makes the Black Forest So Attractive?

The Black Forest is a destination where nature, tradition and outdoor activities come together. Its varied landscapes offer something in every season.

1. Triberg Waterfalls – One of Germany’s Highest Waterfalls

The famous Triberg Waterfalls are among the best-known natural attractions in the Black Forest. The River Gutach cascades down approximately 163 metres over several stages, creating an impressive natural spectacle.

Well-maintained walking paths and viewing platforms allow visitors to experience the waterfalls from different perspectives. The surrounding forest makes this an especially attractive destination for nature lovers and photographers.

2. Lake Titisee – A Beautiful Lakeside Destination

Lake Titisee is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the southern Black Forest. Surrounded by wooded hills and charming scenery, it is an ideal place to relax and enjoy the outdoors.

Visitors can take a boat trip, enjoy a lakeside walk, explore the shops and cafés in Titisee-Neustadt or simply admire the beautiful views.

During the warmer months, swimming and water activities are popular, while winter brings a peaceful atmosphere to the surrounding landscape.

3. Mummelsee – A Picturesque Mountain Lake

Located along the famous Black Forest High Road, Mummelsee is a beautiful mountain lake at an altitude of approximately 1,036 metres.

Surrounded by forest and mountain scenery, it is a popular stop for visitors exploring the northern Black Forest. A walking path circles the lake, and visitors can enjoy traditional regional food and panoramic views.

4. Feldberg – The Highest Mountain in the Black Forest

At approximately 1,493 metres, Feldberg is the highest mountain in the Black Forest and one of the region’s most popular outdoor destinations.

In summer, it attracts hikers, cyclists and nature enthusiasts. In winter, the area becomes a popular destination for skiing, snowboarding and other winter activities.

The summit and surrounding viewpoints offer impressive views across the Black Forest and, on clear days, towards the Alps.

5. Freiburg – A Charming Historic University City

Freiburg im Breisgau is one of the most attractive cities in the region and an excellent starting point for exploring the southern Black Forest.

Its historic old town, famous Freiburg Minster, colourful market square and small water channels known as Bächle create a distinctive atmosphere.

Visitors can enjoy traditional restaurants, cafés, local markets and the lively atmosphere of this university city.

6. Baden-Baden – Culture, Elegance and Wellness

Baden-Baden is internationally known for its elegant architecture, thermal baths, gardens and cultural attractions.

The city offers a different experience of the Black Forest, combining relaxation and wellness with history and sophistication. Highlights include the famous Casino Baden-Baden, the Kurhaus, Lichtentaler Allee and the historic thermal bathing tradition.

7. Traditional Black Forest Villages

Beyond the famous attractions, some of the region’s greatest treasures are its traditional villages and countryside.

Visitors can discover historic farmhouses with distinctive half-hipped roofs, traditional workshops, local handicrafts and small family-run restaurants.

Towns and villages such as Gengenbach, Schiltach and Triberg offer opportunities to experience the region’s architecture, traditions and hospitality.

Black Forest Traditions: Cuckoo Clocks and Black Forest Cake

The Black Forest is not only famous for its natural beauty. It also has a rich cultural heritage.

One of its best-known traditions is the cuckoo clock. Traditional clockmaking developed in the region centuries ago, and visitors can still discover workshops and shops selling handcrafted clocks.

Another famous speciality is Black Forest cake, or Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte. Traditionally prepared with chocolate sponge, cherries, cream and a touch of cherry brandy known as Kirschwasser, it has become one of Germany’s most recognised desserts.

Regional cuisine also includes smoked ham, homemade bread, local cheeses and hearty traditional dishes.

The Black Forest and the Danube and Rhine Rivers

The Black Forest is closely connected to two of Europe’s most important rivers.

The Danube begins in the Black Forest region. Its two source streams, the Brigach and the Breg, meet in Donaueschingen to form the Danube, which flows eastwards through several European countries.

The Rhine, meanwhile, runs along much of the western and southern edge of the Black Forest, forming an important natural boundary between Germany and France and connecting the region with Switzerland.

These rivers, together with the region’s lakes and mountain streams, contribute to the Black Forest’s distinctive natural landscape.

Black Forest Tourism: How Many Visitors Does It Receive?

The Black Forest is one of Germany’s most popular holiday regions, attracting millions of domestic and international visitors every year.

According to the latest full-year figures published by Schwarzwald Tourismus GmbH, the region recorded approximately 9.3 million guest arrivals and 23.4 million overnight stays in 2025 in officially counted accommodation establishments.
