Salzburg is an Austrian city located on the border with Germany at the foot of the Eastern Alps. The Salzach River flows through the middle of the city. With a total catchment area of around 6734 km² and a length of about 225 km to its confluence with the Inn, the Salzach is Salzburg’s largest river and has been closely linked to the history of the state and the city of Salzburg since time.

The Salzburg Slate Alps, also known as the Salzburg Grass Mountains, are a mountain range in the Eastern Alps. They are located in Austria in the province of Salzburg, to a small extent in the province of Styria. As part of the Slate Alps, they are part of the greywacke zone, and are counted either as part of the Northern Alps or the Central Alps.

On the left bank is the old town, which is designated as a pedestrian zone, with buildings from the Middle Ages and Baroque.

On the opposite side of the river is the 19th-century New Town. Mozart’s birthplace in the Old Town is now home to a museum that displays original instruments from the famous composer’s childhood.
