Amazing Things I Did in Stavanger: Norway’s Coastal Gem

Visiting Stavanger was one of the highlights of my trip to Norway! This charming city on the southwestern coast has so much to offer, from jaw-dropping natural landscapes to fascinating cultural experiences. Whether you’re into hiking, history, or just soaking up local vibes, Stavanger has something for everyone. Here are some of the fantastic activities I got to experience while exploring this beautiful city.

1. Hike to the Famous Pulpit Rock (Preikestolen)

The hike to Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) was absolutely breathtaking and hands-down one of the most memorable experiences I had in Norway. The hike took about two hours, but it was worth every step. Standing on the edge of that massive cliff, 600 meters above the sparkling Lysefjord, with views stretching for miles, was surreal. I felt like I was on top of the world! It’s a must-do for any nature lover visiting Stavanger, and the photo ops are incredible.

2. Wander Through Old Stavanger (Gamle Stavanger)

Old Stavanger is like stepping back in time. The streets are lined with these adorable white wooden houses that date back to the 18th century. I spent hours just strolling through the cobblestone streets, popping into little art galleries and boutiques, and grabbing coffee at a cozy café. It’s such a peaceful area, perfect for wandering around. Plus, I visited the Norwegian Canning Museum and learned all about Stavanger’s fishing history – something I didn’t expect to be so fascinating!

3. Visit Stavanger Cathedral

One of the highlights of my city explorations was Stavanger Cathedral. It’s the oldest cathedral in Norway, and its history is incredible. Walking inside, I felt a sense of calm, surrounded by centuries-old stone walls and stunning stained-glass windows. The architecture alone is worth the visit, and it’s located right in the city center, so I easily stopped by after exploring Old Stavanger.

4. Relax at the Stavanger Botanical Garden

If you’re looking for a quiet escape, the Stavanger Botanical Garden is a hidden gem. I spent a lovely afternoon walking through the gardens, which are full of beautiful plants and flowers from around the world. It’s such a peaceful place, and perfect for a relaxing break from the city. I even had a picnic by one of the ponds – highly recommend it!

5. Cruise the Lysefjord

No visit to Stavanger would be complete without a fjord cruise! Sailing through Lysefjord was an unforgettable experience. The dramatic cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and rugged landscapes were like something out of a dream. I even got to see the famous Preikestolen from the water, which gave me a whole new perspective. If you’re lucky, you might spot seals or eagles along the way – it’s an absolute must-do when you’re in the area.

All in all, Stavanger was everything I hoped for and more. Whether you’re an adventurer or just looking to relax, this city has it all. I can’t wait to go back!
